ACCESS TO THE LIBRARY

The access to the Archiginnasio Library is free of charge for all people aged 14 years and over.
Children under the age of 14 must be accompanied by an adult.
In order to guarantee silence and tranquillity to the readers, tourist visits are not allowed inside the library.
That of the Archiginnasio is a conservation and research library, where you can consult manuscript documents, ancient and rare books, whose consultation and preservation must be guaranteed. The furnishings of the library, which date back to the mid-19th century, must also be safeguarded.
For these reasons, it is not possible to access the library with food and drinks of any kind, nor with bags, backpacks (even small), sacks and computer cases.
It is not allowed to enter with books published before 1900.
The entrance to the library is allowed with a maximum of five books. Any exceptions must be agreed with the Head of Public Services.
The access with computers is free and it is not subject to any limitation.
The Manuscripts and Rare books Hall and the Drawings and Prints Private Room have specific access modes.
The library provides a free transparent envelope for storing your personal belongings.
At the entrance of the Library, there is a Cabin where you can take the entrance card which must be filled in, stamped by the library staff and returned at the exit. Through the stamps affixed by the librarians on the entrance ticket, the Library verifies that the material consulted has been returned and that any books borrowed have been registered.
The Library has 156 lockers in a video-controlled cloakroom, where you can also consume food and drinks.
Users are advised not to leave valuables, mobile phones and documents inside the lockers and to always carry with them the Libraries Institution card of the Municipality of Bologna. The library is not responsible for the theft, the loss or the damage of the objects stored in the lockers, or even left temporarily unwatched.
The key to use the lockers is delivered at the entry cabin, after having delivered an identification document, valid and authentic also in photocopy (ID card, passport, driving licence, but also the Libraries Institution card or that of the University of Bologna), which allows to identify with certainty the identity of the person.
The loss of the key entails a refund of 25 euros.
In peak periods, the access to the library could be temporarily suspended, also due to the lack of lockers to store bags and backpacks. If the lockers run out, it is necessary to wait for the exit of a user and, therefore, the return of a key.
The access is always guaranteed for people who need to consult the documents of the library, and some lockers are reserved for those users.
