Manuscripts and Rare Books

The Archiginnasio is among the most important municipal libraries in Italy because of its historical significance and because of its involvement in preservation work. It houses a vast patrimony of rare books and manuscripts.

HOURS

Monday - Thursday 9 a.m. - 5 p.m.
Friday - Saturday 9 a.m.-1:30 p.m.

The distribution of manuscripts occurs on an hourly basis starting at 9:30 a.m. and continuing until 1:30 p.m. (on Friday and Saturday the last distribution is at 12:30 p.m.).

HOW TO PROCEED

Consultation takes place in the Manuscripts and Rare Books Reading Room. Readers may consult a maximum of 5 volumes or 2 manuscript containers per day. It is necessary to present a valid ID card and sign the register.
Manuscripts and rare and valuable material cannot be borrowed from the Library or photocopied.
The librarians in the Manuscripts and Rare Books Reading Room are available to answer questions regarding material from that Room ManoscrittiArchiginnasio@comune.bologna.it.

Drawings and prints

Consultation takes place in the Manuscripts and Rare Books Reading Room (reproductions).
Originals can be consulted in the Cabinet of the Drawings and of the Prints on Tuesday and Wednesday 9 a.m. - 1.30 p.m. (by appointment only tel. 051-276812 - 051-276814; e-mail: manoscrittiarchiginnasio@comune.bologna.it).
